Objectives:
The course aims to equip participants with the essential knowledge and skills required to proactively plan for effective disaster response, and to effectively manage sudden-onset disasters when they do occur. Special attention gave to the rendering of humanitarian assistance to vulnerable populations.
Course Synopsis and Methodology:
The course takes an “all-hazards” approach to the management of disasters – be they natural, or man-made, or man-aggravated.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to
• identify the potential hazards and understand the principles of disaster risk reduction.
• develop effective strategies for the planning, response and recovery phases of a typical disaster
• assess the situation quickly following a sudden-onset disaster and establish immediate priorities
• identify and implement activities to deal with specific needs of affected populations, including shelter, water, sanitation, food and nutrition,
• identify disease outbreak potential and know how to contain them in a timely manner • establish emergency public health services and food distribution points for displaced populations
• collect and analyse relevant information for critical decision making.
• recognise and know how to deal with the emotional and psychological needs of both victims and aid workers.
• monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of assistance provided to vulnerable populations.
• understand the security needs of both the affected population and those providing services
